With the academic year at a close, you may have started to feel increasingly comfortable speaking with professors and fellow students on your American campus. The summer months can be a great time to further increase your English-speaking confidence. Summer reading provides a great opportunity to build upon your English language skills as you prepare for next semester. Here are three ways you can strengthen your English language skills through summer reading:

1. Reference a summer reading list

One way to maintain your English language skills is to make use of your school’s or local library’s summer reading list. Reading lists typically cover many genres and topics that may not have been covered in your college studies. Pick titles that interest you, and work your way through the list. You can also find discussion guides related to your reading through the library or online.

Additionally, your instructors may assign reading to be completed prior to the start of classes. Summer break is the perfect time to get started on these assignments. Whether you choose from a prepared list or create your own, reading lists can provide structured English language practice. They can also keep your mind sharp over the summer months.

2. Read magazines and newspapers

English language magazines and newspapers provide the unique opportunity of putting your language skills to use in a way that pertains to current events and culture. Through these reading materials, you will have the opportunity to learn about different concepts and terms that you may not have encountered in class. Additionally, being up-to-date on current topics and trends will make you feel more comfortable expressing your opinion and partaking in relevant conversations with others in English.

The act of reading magazines and newspapers can easily fit into your daily schedule, regardless of other summer commitments. Set a time each morning or evening to sit down to read through these materials, and jot down notes about new words or concepts you encounter.

3. Take an online course

One way to make your transition back to school in the fall easier and to keep your mind active is to sign up for short, online courses during the summer months. Identify what you’re looking to learn, and research what may be available to you. If your school doesn’t offer online courses, many colleges and universities have these classes available to the general public. Regardless of where you enroll in the course, a short summer class can be a great way to further establish your language skills.

Summer is typically filled with rest, travel, or work-related opportunities. Amidst all of these, be sure to factor in a bit of time each day to strengthen your language skills. Tools such as summer reading lists, current events materials, and online courses can help keep your mind active and prevent learning loss. Examine your commitments, and make a plan to strengthen your English language skills over the summer months.
